Playing Volleyball in the Summer:
The absolute best way to become a better all around volleyball player is to play small sided games; doubles, triples and 4s. As 'they' say, "the game teaches the game"
There are a number of opportunities to play these format games in the summer time.
1. Philly region (Hatboro Horsham area) , East Coast Volleyball runs doubles and 4s grass tournaments from late April through October. More information at www.eastcoastvolleyball.com/index.html
2. At the Jersey Shore. Tournaments at the Jersey shore are run by Great American Volleyball. www.greatamericanvolleyball.com/default.aspx
Beach doubles is the best way to becoming a great all around player. The sand makes you work harder to jump and move. Doubles requires you to read and anticipate the ball in order to cover the court and you have to perform all the skills (serve, pass, set, hit, block, dig) well to succeed. So play doubles whenever possible.
There are numerous sand courts in the local area. Macclesfield, LMT park, Falls twp park, Council Rock South HS. They are often in a state of disrepair so call your municipality and ask them to maintain the courts. If you use them, play doubles or triples, maybe 4s, but never more.
